52 Men Coming Together: the tale of hot nude yoga is a documentary exploring the search by gay men for a sense of community, belonging and spiritual awareness through the practice of nude yoga.

Filmmaker Joy E. Reed follows the men of Hot Nude Yoga (HNY) through three years of their quest for greater unity between mind, body and spirit. As HNY becomes more popular and more noticed by the mainstream media, each member of HNY must face a conflict that exposes popular assumptions about gay men’s relationships.

Inside the studio, graceful movement and a non-sexual intimacy engender a religious awakening. Outside of the studio, interviews with Howard Stern and Unzipped Magazine exploit the titillating taboo of naked, sweaty, gay men.

Not afraid of its connection with eroticism, 52 Men Coming Together: the tale of hot nude yoga revels in the male form, while maintaining the respectful distance befitting a legitimate yoga practice and reminiscent of classical studies of the nude. With sensitivity and humor, from the harsh winter of New York City to the steamy backdrop of Hawaii, the documentary tells us in the participants’ own words why they come for the men, but stay for the yoga.

In addition to chronicling the story of the men of HNY, the film addresses issues of media awareness. Media is a filter through which we receive biased information; if we are unable to detect the bias, it is because we share it. By viewing HNY through a variety of media styles and cutting interviews to have contradicting meanings, we call attention to this fact and indicate that NO form of media, not even documentary film, can claim to be objective.
